Port of Kaohsiung was an active participant in this year’s lantern festival extravaganza organized by the Kaohsiung City Government. The port was the partner site in the 2022 Taiwan Lantern Festival in Kaohsiung, with related activities held in the port’s Penglai Commercial District and along the Love River, accentuating the unique charms of Taiwan’s southernmost port city. The festivities brought crowds into the port, and reacquainted city residents and visitors with Kaohsiung City’s allure as an outdoor destination as well as its panoramic land and water vistas.

Two decades separate the last time, in 2001, that the Taiwan Lantern Festival was held along Kaohsiung City’s Love River. This year’s lantern festivities, spanning Penglai Commercial District, the Love River, and the National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts, set an upbeat theme for the start of spring in the Year of the Tiger and lent a gilded glitter to the city and port on the global stage.

During the festival, Port of Kaohsiung separately organized a drone-light performance entitled “Spotlight Taiwan: Tiger Stars Fly High”. This event, the largest-scale drone show to date in Taiwan, involved 1,500 large drones in a synchronized, 12-minute performance during which 12 different aerial images were emblazoned in the night sky to the delight of residents and visitors.

To ensure public safety throughout the busy festival, at Port of Kaohsiung’s request, the Kaohsiung City Government installed protective barriers along the normally open shoreline sections of Penglai Commercial District to prevent onlookers from inadvertently falling into harbor waters. City officials also assigned additional staff to the area to maintain public order. Furthermore, to maintain overall port safety as well as the safety of both port operations and event activities, conditional controls were put into place for traffic in affected branch navigation channels on the day of the drone show, with updates regularly announced port-wide. Finally, to minimize the impact on port customers / businesses, the harbor signal station, Kaohsiung Harbor Police Department, and Kaohsiung Harbor Fire Brigade all coordinated together to further ensure the safety of port staff / workers, facilities, and vessels.

Port of Kaohsiung takes pride in its central role in welcoming residents and visitors alike back to the National Lantern Festival in Kaohsiung along the city’s beautiful waterfront after a gap of 20 years. The port will continue developing its waterfront areas as spotlight destinations for the port city of Kaohsiung, transforming the face of this modern metropolis. Port of Kaohsiung encourages all to visit our port and city and to participate in opening a new chapter for Kaohsiung on the world stage.
