Minister Wang, Kwo-Tsai of the Ministry of Transportation and Communications leads a delegation to attend the 11th APEC Transport Ministers Meeting.
On May 12, Minister of Ministry of Transportation and Communications, Wang, Kwo-Tsai led a delegation consisting of representatives from the public and private sectors to participate in the 11th APEC Transportation Ministerial Meeting (TMM11) held in Detroit, U.S. from May 15 to 17, 2023. Members include Lin, Chi-Kuo, Director of the Institute of Transportation, Lin, Kuo-Shian, Director of the Civil Aeronautics Administration, Hsieh-Lung, Yeh, Director of the Maritime and Port Bureau, Ho, Shu-Ping, Director of the Department Navigation and Aviation, and Fu-Shan, Lin, Director of the Department of Railways and Highways; Yang Ming Marine Transport Corporation, Evergreen Marine Corporation, China Airlines, and EVA Airways also sent staff to attend the meeting. The meeting is the high-level meeting of the APEC transport department held six years after the last (10th) meeting in 2017. At the meeting, Minister Wang will present Taiwan's achievements resulting from policies in strengthening the resilience of key infrastructure in sea and air transportation, and share the efforts of transportation department to promote green transportation, inclusiveness, and gender equality in the transportation field to collaborate with APEC members to build a future with sustainable, resilient, green, and inclusive transport services.
 
In 2023, the APEC meetings are hosted by the U.S. The theme of the year is Creating a Resilient and Sustainable Future for All. The TMM11 will focus on three topics: Supply Chains and Connectivity, Addressing Transportation’s Role in Climate Change, and Inclusivity and Gender, in the hope that APEC members will face the challenges and opportunities in the transportation sector after the pandemic, and jointly move towards the goal of growth with interconnection, innovation, and inclusiveness.
 
Minister Wang will speak at the session themed Supply Chains and Connectivity to share that Taiwan has given full play to the resilience of the supply chain for rapid recovery, maintained uninterrupted marine and air transportation, and achieved good results by growing against the trend despite the deterioration of the global economic boom due to the pandemic. In addition, he also looks forward to explaining to APEC members the relevant plans of the Transportation Ministry in strengthening the resilience of key infrastructure and promoting future construction, so that participants can understand Taiwan's efforts in connecting economies in the APEC region and their sustainable development.
 
The host, the U.S., will also use the TMM11 side event on May 15 to announce the launch of the APEC Green Maritime Cooperation program. The session sets a stage for Minister Wang to be the guest of honor for a speech to touch on Taiwan’s maritime emission reduction measures such as using emerging technologies or low (zero) carbon fuels, accelerating the replacement of high energy-consuming ships, optimizing ship hulls, and expanding the use of shore power for ships, as well as actively participating in the European Ecological Port Certification (ECO PORT) and the  World Ports Sustainability Program (WPSP) promoted by the International Association of Ports and Harbors (IAPH). There will also be other fruitful results shared with the member economies.
After the three-day 11th Transport Ministers’ Meeting, Minister Wang will participate in a sideline business forum on May 18, which is co-hosted by the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Chicago and the US-Taiwan Business Association. Minister Wang will share in the forum the strategies and policies that Taiwan has formulated regarding the development of transportation technology, the progress of electric vehicles and the use environment to achieve the goal of net zero emissions in 2050, so as to highlight the participation of our delegation at the APEC meeting in Detroit.
 
Our delegation has fully prepared discussion materials for major topics arranged by the meeting, and will exchange views with representatives of member economies at the venue, and the delegation is expected to return on May 20.
