Minister Wang, Kwo-Tsai shares Taiwan's experience at the 11th APEC Transport Ministers' Meeting and has a bilateral meeting with the U.S. Secretary of Transport
Minister Wang, Kwo-Tsai of the Ministry of Transportation and Communications led a delegation to the 11th APEC Transport Ministers Meeting, which kicked off in Detroit on May 16 (US time) and was chaired by, Mr. Pete Buttigieg, US Secretary of Transportation. In the first day meeting, Minister Wang’s primary focus was to lead the Maritime and Port Bureau, Civil Aeronautics Administration, Department of Railways and Highways, Department of Navigation and Aviation, Institute of Transportation, and representatives of related industries to conduct bilateral talks with Mr. Pete Buttigieg, Secretary of Transportation of the U.S., the hosting member economy. Both sides exchanged ideas on topics including green shipping cooperation, electric vehicle industry chain cooperation, drone management, and railway safety. The U.S. was deeply impressed by the achievements and practices shared by Taiwan, and the two sides agreed to keep in touch among relevant competent authorities regarding the above-mentioned issues and establish follow-up exchanges and cooperation.
In the session themed Supply Chains and Connectivity, Minister Wang shared Taiwan's successful experience in strengthening supply chain resilience, explaining that under the impact of the pandemic, Taiwan still maintains its stable operation of the sea and air transportation industry, so that the economy maintains growth momentum. The sea and air transportation industry have grown against the trend and achieved new highs; Minister Wang also shared various forward-looking measures to strengthen the resilience of key infrastructure, and introduced the construction design and upcoming opening of the third terminal and the third runway of Taoyuan Airport in the future. There was also an introduction of the seventh container center of Kaohsiung Port to show to the participating APEC transport ministers the determination of Taiwan to become a benchmark airport in East Asia and a transshipment hub port for containers.
 
In addition, in the session themed Addressing Transportation’s Role in Climate Change, Minister Wang took the opportunity to share the achievements resulting from our comprehensive policies. For instance, Taiwan has increased subsidies for public transport, and all international ports in Taiwan have obtained the Ecoports certification by the European Sea Ports Organization(ESPO) and we have been developing industries related to off-shore wind power.
 
In addition, Minister Wang also held sideline talks with the Deputy Minister of Transport from Vietnam. The two sides agreed to restart exchanges on relevant policies and technology under the premise with the Memorandum of Understanding on Taiwan-Vietnam Transportation Cooperation signed in 2015. Points of contact had been assigned to initiate preparations for the second Taiwan-Vietnam Transport Cooperation Forum. In addition, Minister Wang and the Minister of Transport from Singapore exchanged views on the promotion and handling of electric buses and passenger cars related to the electrification of transportation that both Taiwan and Vietnam have been working on.
