Another Smart Step Forward, Port of Taichung’s New AI-integrated Vessel Intrusion Detection System Tightens Port Security Net
Port of Taichung, TIPC is steadily transforming into a state-of-the-art smart port, with new systems and infrastructures designed to enhance port safety and security comprehensively. The new Breakwater Entrance Intrusion Detection System (IDS) installed at the port’s signal tower completed its final inspection and entered into service on January 16th of this year (2026), crossing another key milestone in the implementation of smart safety management and port water security systems.

The new IDS integrates software upgraded and customized to the needs of monitoring security in and around Port of Taichung’s breakwater entrance. In terms of hardware, high-definition bullet, PTZ, and thermal-imaging security cameras installed near the top of the signal tower and integrated with multi-sensor and AI computing technologies now permit all-weather, full-spectrum 24-hour surveillance of vessel activity in and around the port entrance.

Traditional Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) systems require manual monitoring and have limitations in terms of monitoring scope and response time. To overcome these limitations and enhance the effectiveness of port protective measures, Port of Taichung has incorporated AI automated alert functionality that integrates AI vessel image recognition with the port’s automatic identification system (AIS) into its new smart inspection system.

The new system accurately captures and analyzes unknown vessels within the designated surveillance zone, immediately issuing an alert and activating relevant cross-departmental response mechanisms when unauthorized vessels or abnormal vessel movements are detected. System implementation reduces the burden on human monitors while upgrading vessel and port transit controls from a manual inspection activity to a smart, automated security routine. This upgrade significantly streamlines surveillance-related decision making procedures, effectively reduces the burdens and risks borne by port staff, and allows first-line staff to focus fully on responding to and controlling anomalous events and issues. Overall, Port of Taichung’s new Breakwater Entrance IDS further enhances the safety of vessels transiting to and from the port and bolsters the port’s safety and security fundamentals.

In pursuit of continued optimization in the realms of smart systems, security, and efficiency, Port of Taichung will steadily implement innovative technology applications going forward to further improve its operating environment and provide high quality, reliable port services to its global shipping customers.
