7th Container Port Nearly Ready for Commercial Operations, Set to Further Bolster Port of Kaohsiung’s Hub Port Credentials
Port of Kaohsiung, TIPC leased Wharf Nos. S1~S5 in the 7th Container Terminal to Evergreen Marine as a critical part of a long-term effort to enhance global competitiveness, bolster the port’s credentials as a container hub port, and effectively service the needs of the world’s largest container ships. Phase One of the lease, covering Wharf Nos. 3B~5 and adjacent land, is slated to begin normal operations on May 1st following the final delivery of essential cargo-handling facilities in January. The entry of these wharves into commercial service will mark the first step in solidifying Port of Kaohsiung as one of East Asia’s most-important container ports.

Phase Two of Port of Kaohsiung’s ICT, which commenced in 2011, includes construction of the port’s 7th Container Terminal, work on which was separated into 12 engineering projects commencing in 2020 and finishing up in 2023. Four of these projects have been completed, while the remainder are proceeding according to schedule. As of January of this year (2023), the 7th Container Terminal is 72.97% complete, which is 2.02% more than officially scheduled. When completed, this terminal will operate five, state-of-the-art, 18m-deep berths with a total water length of 2,415m and quay width of 700m. The terminal further provides 149 hectares of container yard space. Operational control over Phase One terminal berths (S3B~S5) was turned over to Evergreen Marine on June 22nd, 2022, which has since been actively installing and testing related operating equipment and systems. Phase Two terminal berths (S1~S3A) and adjacent container yards are scheduled to be turned over to Evergreen Marine this coming June.

Evergreen Marine has leased dedicated container wharves at Port of Kaohsiung since 1986, and currently holds active leases on six wharves, including Wharf Nos. 79~81 and 115~117. Evergreen, which handled 3 million TEU at the port in 2022, is Port of Kaohsiung’s largest container shipping client. In line with the upward trend in shipping vessel sizes, the company has continued to replace older ships in its fleet with new vessels, and now already operates 20,000-TEU VLCSs. Preparing for its new operations out of the 7th Container Terminal, Evergreen has ordered, and is in the process of installing, a total of 19 remotely operated ship-to-shore (STS) container cranes and 56 automated gantry cranes. The 11 STS cranes and 34 gantry cranes required for Phase One operations were delivered in December and January. Evergreen’s state-of-the-art handling and transport infrastructures at the 7th Container Terminal will boost container handling efficiencies, reduce vessel berthing times significantly, and pave the way to full container-yard automation in the future. Evergreen Marine is busily installing and testing critical equipment and systems in order to commence regular operations at 7th Container Terminal starting on May 1st (2023) at Phase One and on May 1st, 2024 at Phase Two.

Port of Kaohsiung, Taiwan’s largest international commercial port, is strategically situated at the crossroads of Asia-Pacific and global trade routes. In addition to the all-new 7th Container Terminal, Port of Kaohsiung is continuing to upgrade and streamline infrastructure throughout the port. Port of Kaohsiung accounts for 70% of national handled container volume, while Evergreen Marine, the world’s 6th largest container shipper, accounts for over 3 out of every 10 containers handled through Kaohsiung. The 7th Container Terminal will secure Port of Kaohsiung’s position as a vital container shipping homeport and set the stage for significant new port business growth. Port of Kaohsiung will continue to innovate for shipping client success, build and operate sustainable and modern facilities, set the standard for smart transformation at all of TIPC subsidiary ports, and work diligently to achieve TIPC’s overall long-term goals for safety, efficiency, and environmental friendliness.
