Port of Hualien Innovative Smart Lighting System Enhances Efficiency and Safety
Port of Hualien, TIPC has integrated outdoor lighting in port wharf areas into a centralized smart-grid-enabled control system to allow managers to selectively control nighttime wharf illumination based on requirements. Pole lights connected to this system can be turned on and off remotely through authorized computer, tablet, and smartphone platforms in real time. The new system eliminates the need to control pole lights manually, saving manhours as well as wear and tear on equipment.

As part of its long-term smart transition, Port of Hualien established a smart-grid support infrastructure in 2015. After three years of planning, and investments totaling NT$89 million, related power and fiber-optic systems were extended to every corner of the port, with 31 power-receiving boxes installed at 25 wharves and along port roads forming the backbone of port’s new dual-power and fiber-optic network.

With basic infrastructure and management systems in place, Port of Hualien has since 2020 been investing human and material resources into realizing smart application efficiencies. In addition to real-time CCTV monitoring and control of port activities, port lighting can now be fully and remotely controlled using any authorized smart device, obviating the need for port staff to physically switch outdoor lights on and off. Furthermore, to improve the overall safety of operations, temperature readings are regularly and automatically monitored in fire-control devices, restrooms, and power boxes throughout the port, with abnormal readings transmitted remotely to responsible staff via text or Line Notify for Control Center response and action.

Port of Hualien will continue to leverage its smart network infrastructure and management systems to implement smart-port upgrades in line with port policy and business needs to achieve current and future smart-port objectives.
