Highways: Happy Roads, Joyful Travel

There are approximately 20,000 kilometers of highway networks in Taiwan, mainly include three north-south national freeways (No.1, 3 and 5), as well as five east-west expressways (No.2, 4, 6, 8 and 10), which extend totally for 1,050 kilometers. The electronic toll collection system has fully gone into effect on the freeways since the end of 2013. In addition, there are 98 provincial highways in Taiwan, including 12 east-west expressways.

In order to provide comfortable and convenient transportation service and raise the willingness of using public transportation, MOTC will continue to work at smoothing transfers between various modes of transportation, raising safety, and establishing “smart” technologies and electronic ticketing systems.

Furthermore, MOTC plans to implement driving tests on actual roadways, better manage the licensing of elderly drivers, assist with transportation safety at colleges and universities, employ technology to better enforce traffic regulations, and strengthen the highway emergency alert system. All of those efforts are done to make roads safer for the driving public and reduce deaths and injuries from traffic accidents.
