On March 15th of this year (2017), Tainan Mayor William Lai announced that work has officially begun on the long-delayed ''Tainan Urban District Railway Underground Project''. The Tainan Urban District Railway Underground Project is a major construction project that the Tainan City Government has striven to get for many years. Its northern end begins about 0.17 kilometers south of the Yongkang Bridge on the south side of Tainan City''s Yongkang Station, it extends south to approximately 1.91 kilometers south of Shengchan Road, a total length of 8.23 km, and its total funding is NT$29.36 billion. In addition to a newly-constructed Tainan Station, there will be two new commuter stations at Linsen Station and South Tainan Station, and, improve the conditions of nine level crossings along the line and eight subways. After completion, a tree-lined boulevard and green corridor space is planned for vacant land on the road along the route. The project has been delayed due to strong opposition from self-help societies and community groups. The project was approved by the Ministry of the Interior in September 2016, and passed for urban planning with amendments. After the completion of the project, it will allow modernized urban development of the Tainan Station area, bringing the city together and eliminating the obstruction of urban areas to ease the city''s ever-worsening traffic and integrate the metropolitan area''s transportation system, thus enhancing the quality of life in the city.
