The construction of around-the-Island electrified railway network is the Nation’s policy. Currently, the non-electrified railway around the Island includes South Link Line and Pingtung Line (from Chaozhou to Fangliao). The “South Link Railway Electrification Project Taitung-Chaozhou Section” organized by the Railway Reconstruction Bureau, Ministry of Transportation and Communications will be the last piece of the jigsaw puzzle for around-the-Island railway electrification. Chairman Hung-Mou Wu of the Public Construction Commission, Executive Yuan visited the “South Link Railway Electrification Project” on January 6, 2017. The South Link Railway Project was approved by Executive Yuan in June 2013, with a total construction distance of 123.4 km. The project starts from Pingtung Chaozhou Station to Taitung Station with improvements to the existing bridges, tunnels, slope protection, stations and railroad crossings and electric facilities. Chairman Wu hoped the Railway Reconstruction Bureau can overcome the difficulties of remote area transportation and construction to complete the last mile of railway electrification, shortening the traveling time from Southern Taiwan to Eastern Taiwan. The completion of railway electrification will reduce the urban-rural gap of Taitung and promote tourism as well as economical development in Eastern Taiwan, allowing people of Taiwan to enjoy safe, reliable, comfort, and convenient public transportation services.
