The major Japanese duty-free retailer Koshin Pearl Corporation has announced plans to open stores in Taiwan at commercial ports in the north, center, and south of the country in order to service the shopping needs of cruise tourism and group tours from Mainland China. Most recently, Koshin Pearl won out in an open selection process to lease the Port of Keelung-owned building at 1 Donghai Street. The port looks for the success of Koshin Pearl to further enhance the city’s tourism industry.
Koshin Pearl’s plans for the 3-story building at 1 Donghai Street include opening a 1,300m2 retail shopping area on the first floor for travelers to browse and shop, opening a branch outlet of a highly rated Shanghai-cuisine restaurant on the second floor, and opening a café on the third floor that will attract guests for its light menu and scenic views of Keelung Harbor. The corporation expects to complete pre-opening renovations by the end of this coming February (2017). Both the Port of Keelung and Koshin Pearl hope that the latter’s successful experience in Japan will help sate the shopping and culinary curiosities of visitors to the city.
The Port of Keelung regularly focuses significant effort and resources on the promotion and development of Keelung-area tourism. The leasing of 1 Donghai Street for retail use is an opportunity to increase consumer spending in the city and to add a new, centralized starting point for tours of local scenic and cultural attractions.
